Student Council Mid-Winter Leadership Workshop

The Eureka Middle School Student Council hosted the Mid-Winter Leadership Workshop on Friday, January 20^th. There were 202 student council members from surrounding schools that attended. The theme this year was “Travel the World of Leadership.” Some of the activities that the kids participated in were salsa dancing and team building games. The guest speaker was Dr. Phil Cavalier of Eureka College.

"Operation Christmas"

"Operation Christmas" was a huge success. This year the EMS student council, students, and staff set out to make Christmas a little brighter for some children in our own community. The goal was to raise $1,000 in order to purchase Christmas gifts for children in our own community for families who could not afford to do so. The EMS family raised $3,492.86 in donations. OUTSTANDING!!! What a blessing it is to be able to serve our community in this way. Thanks to everyone who gave to this wonderful cause.

IESA Recognition: Catherine Argo, Allison Brewer, and Emily Ferguson were chosen to represent EMS in the singing of the "National Anthem" from a state-wide IESA audition. Both Catherine and Allison sang during the opening of the IESA Girls State Finals Basketball tournaments. Emily Ferguson was also chosen, and she will be singing during the IESA wrestling state championships this winter. The girls were chosen among many solo applicants. It is a great honor and we are truly proud of them.

Lego League Team Advances to State!

Congratulations to the EMS Lego League teams who participated in Regional competition at Bradley University this past weekend. Coach Grichnik’s Digital Hornets were winners of the “Judges Choice” award and were given the opportunity to perform their project in front of the entire gathering of 48 teams. Coach Kruger’s Cerebral Stingers team was given one of the top awards in their division and advanced to the state competition in January in Chicago. Congratulations Hornets!!!

IMSA Goes to Challenger Learning Center

Netbooks Onboard at EMS

The EMS PTO purchased 30 Netbooks for the school this Fall. Students are busily working on them. To date, the PTO has raised over $14,000 since last Spring. EMS greatly appreciates all of the support from the community.

5th Graders Go To Shedd Aquarium

journeyed to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. It was an exciting and educational adventure in which the students got to experience animal behavior, habitats, adaptations, and ecosystems.

Teaching students to be thankful for the men who fight for our country began with a lesson from World War II veteran, Richard Acker. "Ack" drove a tank during World War II. He shared his memories with the 8th grade Literature students. They then used his words to draft a narrative written in the third person that reflected Dick's wartime experience.

Next the students interviewed a veteran from a war. Then they drafted, edited and revised a narrative story from that interview that they published with pictures; the book was bound and will be shared with their peers.

Finally, on the day before Veteran's Day, a Vietnam Veteran, Roy Wiegand, taught the 8th graders what it means to have your life changed by serving your country. Roy spoke about the contrast of his youthful days in the farming community of Congerville with arriving as a young adult in the conflict of Vietnam. Roy shared the history and the politics of that time period which framed the conflict of Vietnam.

Using narrative episodes, he wove a mesmerizing story of friendship that evolves between soldiers. Roy shared the heartening and the hateful stories of war. After he finished sharing his story, he asked for questions. The questions from the 8th graders revealed that they had indeed learned what war is and what a veteran means to our country.

Thank you to Roy Wiegand and Richard Acker and all the other veterans who have served our country so well that we are able to take November 11 and remember their actions.

6th Grade Homeroom President Elections

It was Election Day at EMS on Tuesday, November 8. 6th grade students gave speeches in each homeroom class in hopes of being elected their homeroom president. Election results were announced at the end of the day. Congrats to all candidates and winners!

5th Grade Market - A Success!

Many 5^th graders at EMS decided to start their own business after completing an entrepreneur project to gain understanding of the free enterprise system in America. Together, they set up a 5^th grade market during the afternoon on October 14, where they sold their home-made items to other students (and teachers) within the school. At the end of the afternoon, they earned a total of $535.28 of which half will be given to the fund for a tree and bench in memory of Cheyenne Burwell. The other half will be used for the students on their 5^th grade fieldtrip.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in 5th Grade Art

In Ms. Pyle's 5th grade Art class, the 3 R's (reduce, reuse, and recycle) were taught using puppets. Students were divided into six groups and each group wrote a screenplay, which included information about being environmentally friendly. They designed and created their characters out of used water bottles and scrap construction paper, painted their setting on large paper, and performed their plays in class. Our girls competed in front of St. Louis Rams cheerleaders against both middle school and high school squads to take first place. For winning the event, the girls performed for the crowd at the Cornbelter’s game that same evening. Great job girls!

This year Eureka Community Unit School District 140 is accepting mail-in registrations for all buildings. You may also drop off your Middle School Student's registration packet to the Middle School office. Registration packets were sent home with each student at the end of the 2010-11 school year. If you need a registration packet you can stop by the Middle School office from 7:00 to 3:00 Monday - Friday.

Registration will be held on Thursday, August 4 for all students who are NEW to the district and anyone who did not register through the mail. Registration times:

HOPE Week at EMS

You have probably heard the heart wrenching story of local hero Dax Locke. At 13 months he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that later took his life after just two years. His parents decided the best way to give back would be to raise enough money to run St. Jude’s for one day. The cost...1.6 million dollars! To help in this goal, Eureka Middle School raised a little over $2,000 in one week this month.

Eureka High School along with Eureka Middle School, Davenport Elementary School and Congerville Elementary School filled their calendars with a variety of events to honor Hope Week 2011. The vision is to see our school body and community unite for the fight against cancers affecting children to reach our goal of $10,000. So far, we have raised almost $16,000!!

King Arthur at EMS!!

The 6th grade Literature classes presented plays last week on King Arthur. This was part of the Middle Ages unit the students are working on in Social Studies, Literature, and Grammar. The unit ends with a field trip to Medieval Times!

IMSA Fusion

IMSA Fusion students recently completed a unit on forensic sleuthing. During our unit the students analyzed soil and glass to solve crimes, investigated how the length of bones relate to the height of a person, and completed an on-line simulation of gel electrophoresis as part of a DNA investigation among other activities. To top off our unit, the students visited the Field Museum in Chicago to complete a DNA activity with a museum scientist. The students were able to extract DNA from wheat germ while at the lab. EMS students also did an activity in which they discovered that determining how closely living things are related based on physical characteristics is not very accurate when compared to DNA results. After their lab activity, students were able to talk to and observe museum scientists at work. One scientist was completing gel electrophoresis on Ostrich DNA so students could see a real life example of the activity they did on-line.

A United States Army Sargeant Visits EMS

Sgt. Justin(JJ) Erickson, father of 5^th grader Justin Erickson, visited with the fifth graders on Tuesday, March 22^nd and spoke to the group about his involvement in the US Army for the past 17 years. He is currently stationed in Afghanistan and he is in charge of about 100 mechanics who work on jeeps, tanks, humvees, trucks and the like. He told the children that the food over there is not very good, but America has been helping the people of Afghanistan to have better lives. Since the Americans have been there, these people now have electricity, cable television, the internet but most importantly the Americans have started over 350 schools where not only boys attend but now girls can go to school too. The children asked Mr. Erickson a lot of questions and he was very gracious to answer them. He even brought back to the fifth graders, letters that the soldiers wrote to them. Mr. Erickson has to return to Iraq but hopes he is home sometime in June to stay in the USA for awhile.

7th graders earned pizza on Monday, March 21, for their hard work in completing ISAT testing. To earn tickets, students had to put forth time and effort. Way to go, EMS students!

7th and 8th graders in Horticulture Class

The class is putting in a barked trail that will be bordered on both sides by indigenous tree species. The trail will be approximately one mile long when completed. The bark mulch was produced by trimming the brush from the nature center and running it through a chipper shredder supplied by Vermeer of Eureka and operated by Chuck Zimmerman for 3 1/2 hours on March 19th. The transplanted trees are being supplied at no cost by serveral farmers in Woodford County.

Student Council Leadership Workshop

The Eureka Middle School Student Council hosted the Mid-Winter Regional Leadership Conference on Friday, January 21^st at Eureka Middle School. There were 10 schools plus Eureka that attended with 207 students participating. The night began with a “Call to Order” from the Midwest district representative Megan McGwire. The guest speaker was Jake Eigsti from Eureka. He spoke to the kids about leadership and teamwork. The kids were then separated into groups where they did an icebreaker activity. After the icebreaker activity they had dinner in the cafeteria. The advisors met for a separate dinner in the learning center to discuss and share student council issues. After dinner everyone returned to the gym for team building activities. The night ended with prizes being awarded and 2 lucky students getting to do the flying squirrel. We had 26 parents and high school student council members helping with the activities. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped!

Distinguished Student Event Changes!

ATTENTION 7th and 8th Grade Students: We are making some changes to our DSN activities for 7^th and 8^th grade students. Many of our students who had earned the opportunity to attend DSN dances in the past were choosing not to participate for various reasons. As a result, we are trying to provide more opportunities that would appeal to a broader portion of our student population. The DSN activity for the 2^nd quarter will take place during 8^th and 9^th hour on Friday, January 14^th. We will not be having a dance, but we will be planning a variety of activities for our students.

The 5th grade has been studying the oceans in Science for the past few weeks. We wrapped up the unit with a trip to the Shedd Aquarium on Wednesday, November 10th. There were 132 students, 7 teachers and 63 parents that attended. Everyone enjoyed the dolphin and beluga whale show, the 4-D movie, the Wild Reef, and various other exhibits.

5th Grade Veterans Program

The fifth graders honored our local veterans on Tuesday, November 9th starting with a presentation in the learning center where the audience listened to Nate Hurn, a representative from Cong. Aaron Schock's office and listened to fifth graders share their thoughts and powerpoint presentation dealing with wars America has fought in. Then students and veterans were allowed to rotate to different activities such as hearing two guest speakers, Paul Lister and Roy Wiegand who fought in Vietnam, write letters to soldiers now serving, play Veterans Day Bingo, and visit an artifact room. Refreshments were provided at the end. It truly was a day enjoyed by all the fifth graders and veterans. It showed a lot of patriotism.

"The Art of Public Speaking"

Students in Mrs. Selvey's 8th grade English classes created a demonstration by sharing "something" that the student is an expert at doing or knowing. Students demonstrated concepts ranging from taking photos of dogs, to scrapbooking, to performing CPR. Students were excited to use the stage and the learning center while demonstrating their idea. Learning to speak effectively while using language appropriate to the situation was our goal.

Elections in the 6th Grade

Mrs. Selvey and Mrs. Zehr's Grammar Classes went to the polls on Tuesday, November 2nd. The 6th Grade students were involved in a project that allowed them to create a persuasive essay. It also showed them the voting process and the importance choosing good leaders for the 6th grade.

Girls Basketball provides some "EXTRA" excitement!

This past week the Girl's Basketball teams hosted two events at their basketball games. The first was "Blackout" night. Fans were encouraged to wear black in support of the team. The next game featured a "Pie Eating Contest" between Mr. Walker, Mr. Bellini, Mrs. Wondercheck and Mr. Bardwell. Mr. Walker came away victorious, but we're not really sure he "felt" victorious after the contest.

Both the 7th and 8th grade teams are having a great year and they are fun to watch. Come out and support our Lady Hornets!

Students and faculty at EMS showed their school spirit during "Homecoming Week." Crazy Hair day, Twin Day, Nerd Day, Football Day, and Green & White Day were the spirit days of the week. There was a healthy competition between homeroom classes to see which class had the most school spirit. Congratulations to Mrs. Tignor's homeroom class for showing the most school spirit by having the greatest amount of participation each day. EMS has a lot of school spirit! Student Council Sponsors "COMPLIMENT FRIDAY."

The EMS Student Council sponsored "Compliment Friday." As students, teachers and parents arrived at school they were greeted with "Free Compliments." As a result, there were a lot of bright and smiling faces walking the halls of EMS. This act of kindness became contagious as compliments were heard being given throughout the day. Great Job Student Council!

Peer Mediation Begins Again

Our peer mediation program"Common Ground" continues into the second year as it had positive results last year. Mediators were trained at the beginning of the year and are eager to support the school in having a more positive environment. Conflicts such as rumors, name calling, friendship issues, and threats can be referred so that those in dispute can communicate effectively with the support of a neutral, third party. Students are more likely to resolve conflicts peacefully when they have the opportunity to sit face to face and talk uninterrupted so that they hear and understand each other’s point of view. Students and staff are able to generate a mediation referral for any students who are in conflict.

• HELP!! We need your help. We are in need of a volunteer(s) to be our Market Day Chairperson(s). Market Day is a fundraiser for our school. The Chairperson(s) time commitment would be about two-hours a month sorting through orders and placing the orders on-line, as well as, a two hour commitment (4:00-6:00) on pick-up nights once a month. Last year Market-Day brought in almost $1,900.00 for our school. If you are willing to help us out with this volunteer opportunity, please contact the EMS office at 467-3771. THANKS!

LEGO LEAGUE BEGINS AGAIN!!!

• The EMS Lego League is getting ready to kick off a new year. The kids involved in this group will meet each Thursday during the fall semester to work on a science project and to build and program a robot to perform specific tasks. The team will match their robot and project against other teams from all over the state as they participate in some fun and spirited competition. Any EMS student is invited to come to an informational meeting and learn more about this exciting group. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, August 26 from 3:20 until 4:00 in room 136. Welcome Cindy Wondercheck!

The Eureka Middle School Family would like to welcome Mrs. Cindy Wondercheck as our new Assistant Principal. Mrs. Wondercheck has most recently been teaching in McLean County Unit District No. 5 and has been a classroom teacher for 16 years. She received both her Bachelor's degree and Master's degree from Eastern Illinois University. Mrs. Wondercheck and her family currently reside in Goodfield, and she looks forward to the opportunity to work with the excellent EMS staff.

Eureka Middle School would like to welcome Mr. Robert Bardwell as our new principal. Mr. Bardwell has been the principal at Lettie Brown Elementary School in Morton, IL for the past eight years. He currently resides in Goodfield with his family and looks forward to this leadership role at EMS and in our community.
